Johannesburg, South Africa
VILAND, South Africa - A South Africa doctor is now suing the US Food and Drug Administration over the claims that he sold Viagra and the generic version of the erectile dysfunction drug sildenafil over the internet.
The lawsuit, filed Monday in South Africa's Supreme Court, alleged that the Viagra maker, Pfizer, illegally marketed the drug in the United States as Viagra for men and used the generic version for erectile dysfunction.
The complaint also claimed that the company illegally supplied Viagra to men in India and Africa.
The complaint said that the company also sold a prescription version of Viagra to men in India and the United Kingdom. It added that Viagra was sold in the United States only when doctors prescribed it by a doctor.
Pfizer said in a statement that the Viagra product was approved by the FDA but the generic version is not.
The Viagra product was sold only when doctors prescribed it by a doctor, said Pfizer spokesman Richard Clark, who is also the US director of research and development for the company.
"We are taking a significant step in that direction by filing this complaint," Clark said. "We have no way of knowing whether or not the product we are producing actually comes from a pharmacy in the United States."
Clark said he was "not surprised" by the suit, which is being filed in the Supreme Court of South Africa. He said the company had been working on the product for some time and had "very good faith" in obtaining a license to sell it.
Clark said the Viagra product was approved by the FDA but the generic version was not, and that the manufacturer had not consulted with the FDA before marketing the drug. Pfizer said it had received approval for the drug to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
Viagra is the brand name for the drug sildenafil, or Viagra.
According to the suit, the company's patent for the generic product expired in 2006 and it is now marketing the generic version of the drug. The product is sold by Pfizer, which is one of the world's largest companies.
Viagra, the brand name for the drug sildenafil, is a type of erectile dysfunction medication that treats men with erectile dysfunction.
Viagra is also sold by other companies that sell generic versions of erectile dysfunction drugs.
Clark said that the company has made "several attempts" to obtain a license to sell the generic Viagra product.

A popular sex drug has been linked to potentially dangerous side effects, including an increased risk of heart attack and stroke in men taking it.
The drug sildenafil (the same active ingredient found in Viagra) was also found to have the potential for sexual side effects in clinical trials.
The drug sildenafil was also marketed as a treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension in 2006.
The drug sildenafil is the active ingredient in the well-known erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.
Viagra is the trade name for sildenafil citrate, and is a PDE-5 inhibitor.
It works by relaxing blood vessels in the penis, allowing more blood to flow into the penis when a man is sexually stimulated. This increased blood flow helps to achieve and maintain an erection.
Men taking sildenafil should talk to their doctor if they have concerns about the side effects.
The drug was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in June 2011.
It is not known if it was linked to an increased risk of heart attack or stroke.
A found that men taking sildenafil had a significantly lower incidence of heart attacks or strokes than those taking a similar-sounding nitrate drug. The study, funded by Pfizer, showed that taking sildenafil reduced the risk of having a heart attack and stroke by 52 percent.
However, the FDA did not approve the use of sildenafil in this context.
In its 2012 guidelines for nitrates, the FDA advises men to take the drug at least an eight-hour time limit before bedtime.
Sildenafil comes as a generic drug, and is available in two strengths.
The FDA said it was not aware of the potential link between sildenafil and an increased risk of heart attack or stroke.
The FDA also did not recommend that men take sildenafil to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The agency also said that it was not aware of the potential link between sildenafil and an increased risk of heart attack or stroke.
However, the FDA has not yet received any additional information about the link between sildenafil and an increased risk of heart attacks or strokes.
Sildenafil is not approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The drug is not known to have the potential for sexual side effects. This article was amended on May 4, 2017.
